Break Up Ticketmaster Coalition Calls for Urgency in Forthcoming Case Against Live Nation-Ticketmaster

April 16, 2024 Press Release

Washington, D.C. — In response to new reporting indicating the Department of Justice Antitrust Division will file a suit challenging Live Nation-Ticketmaster’s monopoly power over live events, the Break Up Ticketmaster Coalition released the following statement.

“It’s past time for the DOJ to stop the music on Live Nation-Ticketmaster’s dominance over live events,” the Break Up Ticketmaster Coalition said in a statement. “The case against this giant was strong when our coalition launched in 2022, but since then, we’ve seen repeated incidents revealing how Live Nation leverages its power to bend the entire industry—from live sports to music and more—to its will. Until we see concrete, structural reform, Live Nation-Ticketmaster will continue to expand its tentacles into new lines of business, swallow up venues, bully artists, and degrade live events experiences for consumers and fans. With Live Nation-Ticketmaster’s merger consent agreement set to expire in 2025 unless the Department of Justice acts, we encourage the Antitrust Division to listen to the concerns of over 100,000 Americans and finally break them up.”

In October 2022, a broad coalition of allies launched #BreakUpTicketmaster, a campaign to urge the Department of Justice to investigate and unwind the Live Nation-Ticketmaster merger of 2010. The Break Up Ticketmaster Coalition has since organized over 100K concerned fans, artists, and independent venue owners that want to break Ticketmaster’s power over live events ticketing, artist promotion, and venue ownership.

The American Economic Liberties Project works to ensure America’s system of commerce is structured to advance, rather than undermine, economic liberty, fair commerce, and a secure, inclusive democracy. Economic Liberties believes true economic liberty means entrepreneurs and businesses large and small succeed on the merits of their ideas and hard work; commerce empowers consumers, workers, farmers, and engineers instead of subjecting them to discrimination and abuse from financiers and monopolists; foreign trade arrangements support domestic security and democracy; and wealth is broadly distributed to support equitable political power.
