Corporate Lobbying Machine Smears Director Chopra For Protecting Working People

June 28, 2022 Press Release

Washington, D.C. — The American Economic Liberties Project released the following statement in response to the U.S. Chamber of Commerce’s announcement of a targeted smear campaign against Consumer Financial Protection Bureau Director Rohit Chopra in late-June.

“The Chamber of Commerce is clearly terrified that CFPB Director Chopra will use the full extent of his authority to combat extreme and illegal abuses of corporate power,” said Sarah Miller, Executive Director of the American Economic Liberties Project. “Unlike the Chamber of Commerce, Director Chopra is a clear-eyed fighter for workers, small businesses, and local communities. He was appointed to hold the most powerful corporations in the world accountable, and to put the needs of consumers and working people first. If that makes the corporate influence machine nervous, it should.”

The American Economic Liberties Project works to ensure America’s system of commerce is structured to advance, rather than undermine, economic liberty, fair commerce, and a secure, inclusive democracy. Economic Liberties believes true economic liberty means entrepreneurs and businesses large and small succeed on the merits of their ideas and hard work; commerce empowers consumers, workers, farmers, and engineers instead of subjecting them to discrimination and abuse from financiers and monopolists; foreign trade arrangements support domestic security and democracy; and wealth is broadly distributed to support equitable political power.
