Economic Liberties Applauds Illinois House Passage of Junk Fee Ban

April 18, 2024 Press Release

Washington, D.C. — In response to news that the Illinois House of Representatives has passed a bill to ban junk fees (HB 4629), the American Economic Liberties Project released the following statement.

“With today’s vote, Illinois is one step closer to tossing junk fees in the trash,” said Pat Garofalo, Director of State and Local Policy at the American Economic Liberties Project. “Mandatory and deceptive junk fees are more than just a nuisance: they cost working families thousands per year and undermine fair competition across the economy. Americans are fed up with these fees, which is why state-led legislation to ban them is sweeping the nation. We’re grateful for Rep. Bob Morgan’s clear-eyed leadership on this bill and hope the Illinois Senate passes it without delay.”

The American Economic Liberties Project works to ensure America’s system of commerce is structured to advance, rather than undermine, economic liberty, fair commerce, and a secure, inclusive democracy. Economic Liberties believes true economic liberty means entrepreneurs and businesses large and small succeed on the merits of their ideas and hard work; commerce empowers consumers, workers, farmers, and engineers instead of subjecting them to discrimination and abuse from financiers and monopolists; foreign trade arrangements support domestic security and democracy; and wealth is broadly distributed to support equitable political power.
