Economic Liberties Applauds Minnesota Legislature’s Passage of Junk Fee Ban

May 16, 2024 Press Release

Washington, D.C. — In response to the Minnesota Senate’s passage of the Conference Committee report for HF 3438, a ban on junk fees, by a bipartisan vote of 36-31, the American Economic Liberties Project released the following statement.

“The Minnesota legislature delivered a huge win for consumers and honest businesses across the state by voting to ban junk fees,” said Pat Garofalo, Director of State and Local Policy at the American Economic Liberties Project. “These deceptive, mandatory fees cost Minnesota families thousands of dollars per year, and harm local businesses that don’t want to use tricks and traps to ensnare customers. Unsurprisingly, banning junk fees is overwhelmingly popular, with support from 85 percent of likely Minnesota voters from all across the political spectrum. We commend Senator Port and Rep. Greenman for their steadfast leadership on this issue, and urge Gov. Walz to sign HF3438 into law without delay in order to ensure Minnesota is a national leader in the nationwide movement to permanently throw junk fees in the trash.”

The American Economic Liberties Project works to ensure America’s system of commerce is structured to advance, rather than undermine, economic liberty, fair commerce, and a secure, inclusive democracy. Economic Liberties believes true economic liberty means entrepreneurs and businesses large and small succeed on the merits of their ideas and hard work; commerce empowers consumers, workers, farmers, and engineers instead of subjecting them to discrimination and abuse from financiers and monopolists; foreign trade arrangements support domestic security and democracy; and wealth is broadly distributed to support equitable political power.
