Washington, D.C. — The American Economic Liberties Project released the following statement in response to the House of Representatives passing H.R. 1, the For The People Act. Introduced by Rep. John Sarbanes (MD-03), H.R. 1 strengthens voting rights, limits partisan gerrymandering, transforms campaign finance laws by slowing the flow of dark money, and more. If passed by the Senate and enacted, the For The People Act would be the biggest democracy reform the United States has seen in decades.

“Expanding democracy is absolutely critical to redistributing power and accelerating policy changes that reflect the interests of working people, small businesses, and communities, rather than powerful corporate and financial interests,” said Sarah Miller, Executive Director of the American Economic Liberties Project. “We are grateful for the leaders in Congress who have long pushed for democracy reform and championed various aspects of this critical legislation. We’re also inspired by the movement groups and organizers who are working each day to make our politics more democratic and representative, and who helped push H.R. 1 over the finish line. We hope that the Senate acts quickly.”
