Statement on Brian Deese’s Departure From White House National Economic Council

February 2, 2023 Press Release

Washington, D.C. — In response to news that Brian Deese, a champion of President Biden’s competition agenda, is stepping down from his role as Director of the National Economic Council, the American Economic Liberties Project released the following statement.

“Brian Deese has been instrumental in restoring anti-monopoly and competition policy to its rightful role at the center of economic policymaking in Democratic administrations,” said Sarah Miller, Executive Director of the American Economic Liberties Project. “Brian’s commitment to advancing a whole-of-government approach to promoting fair competition and a reinvigorated approach to antitrust enforcement is a big part of the reason why our country has made more progress in its fight against monopoly power than many of us dared to believe might be possible at the start of Joe Biden’s presidency. It is a legacy to be enormously proud of, and one we look forward to working with his successor to uphold.”

The American Economic Liberties Project works to ensure America’s system of commerce is structured to advance, rather than undermine, economic liberty, fair commerce, and a secure, inclusive democracy. Economic Liberties believes true economic liberty means entrepreneurs and businesses large and small succeed on the merits of their ideas and hard work; commerce empowers consumers, workers, farmers, and engineers instead of subjecting them to discrimination and abuse from financiers and monopolists; foreign trade arrangements support domestic security and democracy; and wealth is broadly distributed to support equitable political power.
