Trump Fires CFPB Director Chopra, Ending Pro-Consumer Era That Put Billions Back in Americans’ Pockets
Washington, D.C. — Following news that Rohit Chopra, Director of the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau, has been fired by President Trump, the American Economic Liberties Project released the following statement congratulating him on his agency’s accomplishments under his tenure.
“Director Chopra’s steadfast leadership in defending American consumers and holding corporate lawbreaking accountable has left an indelible mark on the CFPB and the broader financial landscape,” said Nidhi Hegde, Executive Director of the American Economic Liberties Project. “From cracking down on junk fees and saving consumers billions of dollars to standing up to Big Tech and Big Banks, the CFPB under Chopra truly fulfilled its mandate as the ‘cop on the beat’ for American consumers. Despite relentless attacks from the Chamber of Commerce and the banking industry’s massive legal and lobbying forces, Chopra remained resolute in his mission to protect families, small businesses, and vulnerable communities from financial exploitation. His leadership, vision, and courage have had a profound impact, and we are deeply grateful for the remarkable achievements he and his team accomplished over the past four years.”
“President Trump’s decision to fire him is a giveaway to Big Banks and Wall Street, who would rather the CFPB lay still while they rip off consumers across the country,” added Hegde. “This decision is particularly shocking given Chopra’s commitment to commonsense, bipartisan reforms like addressing debanking and capping credit card rates — policies President Trump himself supported on the campaign trail. It raises questions about the administration’s willingness to follow through on the populist promises they made to working Americans. If the CFPB is to remain a strong force for consumer protection, it must continue the vital work Director Chopra has advanced during his tenure.”

The American Economic Liberties Project works to ensure America’s system of commerce is structured to advance, rather than undermine, economic liberty, fair commerce, and a secure, inclusive democracy. Economic Liberties believes true economic liberty means entrepreneurs and businesses large and small succeed on the merits of their ideas and hard work; commerce empowers consumers, workers, farmers, and engineers instead of subjecting them to discrimination and abuse from financiers and monopolists; foreign trade arrangements support domestic security and democracy; and wealth is broadly distributed to support equitable political power.
